Eads and Kiowa County Area

Communities:   Eads

Kiowa County is rapidly becoming known as the ”Environmentally Friendly” county on Colorado’s eastern plains. Long known for it’s pristine beauty, wide-open spaces, and clean air, Kiowa County has also begun to play a role in technological advances designed to maintain and preserve our planet. A focused effort to turn sunflower oil into motor oil is based in Kiowa County, and a recently constructed boat launch ramp on Nee Gronda Reservoir was built partially from recycled tires.

Adding to the environmentally friendly atmosphere in Kiowa County is the unspoiled presence of the Great Plains Reservoirs, located 13 miles south of Eads. Nearly 22 square miles of water typically grace these natural reservoirs, providing a haven for wildlife and recreational enthusiasts alike.

Fishing, hunting, bird watching, and viewing of wildlife are found in abundance in Kiowa County. Full time residents of Kiowa County number less than one person per square mile, providing an un-crowded atmosphere for all to enjoy.

Adding to the ambience of Kiowa County is the recently declared National Historic Site commemorating the location of the Sand Creek Massacre, which occurred in 1864. The designation of US Hwy 287, which runs through the heart of Kiowa County, as the official Ports to Plains Highway makes visiting Kiowa County easier than ever.

Visiting Kiowa County is visiting America as it once was. Clean air, unspoiled vistas, recreation, fishing, hunting, bird watching, and an environmentally friendly atmosphere to enjoy these activities are what make Kiowa County unique
